The regional center of the Republic of Mari-El. The city was founded in 1583. For many years it was one of the main centers of the timber trade. It is considered a prototype of Vasyuki village from the satirical novel "12 Chairs" by Ilf and Petrov . You will discover several museums in Kozmodemyansk: Grigoriev’s Art and History Museum, the Museum of Ostap Bender, and an open-air ethnographic museum of the merchant household.
Many buildings in the city show the original, intact wooden Mari carving patterns.
