Sortavala

Sortavala
One of the most historical cities of Russia, Sortavala is located deep in the bays and islands of the Ladoga Skerries in the northern part of the lake. The first mention of the town dates back to the 1500s. Located in the border area, during different periods of its history, Sortavala ( called Serdobol by the Russian Empire) belonged to Finland or Sweden. Now it is the regional center of the Republic of Karelia.   The Mountain Park Ruskeala, one of the gems of Karelia, is a stunningly beautiful marble quarry close to Sortavala.
There is no pier in the city for large ship, so tourists are transported to the shore by high-speed hydrofoil boats, travel time 10 minutes.
