Makaryevo
Makaryevo
A village situated in Lyskovsky District of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast (in 1958-2009 – an industrial community). Located on the left bank of the Volga River, a few miles below the mouth of Kerzhents river. Population – 203 people.
The settlement formed around the famous Zheltovodsky Makaryev Convent which was rebuilt in the 1620s on the spot of St. Macarius’ cell that was originally placed here in 1435-1439.
The Makaryevo Village in question should not be confused with the city Makaryev of Kostroma Oblast that formed around the Makaryev of Unzha Monastery, founded by the same reverend in 1439.
Russia's largest fair – the Makaryev Fair – was regularly organized in the village from 1641 to 1816 before being was transferred to Nizhny Novgorod after the Fire of 1816.
In 1789-1920, Makaryev was a district town, the center of Makaryev County, Nizhny Novgorod Province. However, most of its institutions were moved to the right (south) bank of Volga, to Lyskovo Village located on the Kazan Route in the 19th century. Makaryev Town became Makaryevo Village and Lyskovo Village became a city after the elimination of the county. In 1958 Makaryevo became a workers’ village.
Makaryevo badly suffered from the construction Cheboksary hydroelectric power station, part of its inhabitants were relocated. The newly-built water retaining structures distorted the scenery around the monastery.
