There are more than 400 lakes on Solovki with considerably different water levels. The construction of Solovetsky monastery resulted in the growth of the population and a corresponding increase in demand for potable water. The lack of rivers forced the settlers to connect lakes with canals. The canal system was started by the abbot Philippe (1548-1566) about 400 years ago. 78 lakes have been connected into a single Drinking Water System which feeds the Holy Lake. The distance from the tourist office to the boat station is 2.8 km. Pella rowing boats for up to 5 people are available there.
