Vytegra — administrative center of the district of Vytegra, Vologda region. Known since 1710 as the village Vyangi with its similarly-named pier, on the confluence the of Vytegra and Vyangi. An important trade route from Arkhangelsk to St Petersburg used to pass through Vyterga. In 1773 the village was chartered and renamed to Vytegra after the well-know Vytegra River. The revival of economic and cultural life in the first half of the 19
th century was associated with the opening (in 1810) of the Mariinsky canal of the Mariinsky gateway water system.
