Solovki (Solovetsky Islands, Solovetsy archipelago) is a group of islands in the northern part of the Onega Bay of the White Sea, 165 km south of the Polar circle (65° 1' 22"north and 35° 44' 35” east). Solovki is known for its unique collection of stone monuments of primitive culture (mazes, sanctuaries, symbolic structures and mounds, and sites of primitive tribes), the majestic history of the Solovetsky Preobrazhensky (Transfiguration) Monastery (founded in 1436), the tragic events of the era of the Solovki Special Purpose Camp (1923-1939), and the legendary Cabin Boy School of Solovki (1942-1943.)

These days Solovki comprises one of the largest Federal Reserve Museums in Russia, and the functioning Stavropegic Solovetsky Spaso-Preobrazhensky (Transfiguration) Monastery. The modern village of Solovetsky has about 1000 inhabitants.
