Petrozavodsk

The capital and largest city of the Republic of Karelia, which stretches along the Gulf of Petrozavodsk on the western shore of Lake Onega. The city originated in 1703 from Tsar Peter the Great's decree for the foundation of an arms factory by the mouth of the Lososinka River, feeding into Lake Onega. At that time, during the Great Northern War it was the largest foundry in Russia prior to the founding of the Ural and Tula plants.
