Volga’s Capital is the economical, historical and cultural center of the Volga region, “Russia's Pocket”, the 5th largest city of Russia (by population). The city is at the confluence of the Oka and the Volga, by the Dyatlovo foothills. The famous Volga slope is crowned by the ancient Kremlin whose buildings date to the 15th century. The Pechersky Ascension monastery on the banks of the Volga and The Annunciation monastery on the Oka form the trunk of a “majestically planted city”. The Stroganov (Rozhdestvenskaya) church close to the railway station looks like a twin to St.Basil’s cathedral in Moscow and Spas-On-Blood in St.Petersburg due to its masterfully decorated domes.
The Upper Volga embankment and the pedestrian Big Pokrovskaya street are superb routes for a stroll.
UNESCO placed Nizhny Novgorod on its World Heritage list.
