Before 1918 the city was named Romanov-Borisoglebsk (Boris and Gleb). Tutaev is divided by the Volga into two parts. Historically, the left-bank side is called Romanov, and the the right-bank side is Boris and Gleb. Until the end of the 18th century they were two separate administrative units. The two cities were merged into one by decree of Alexander I in 1822. Tutaev is picturesquely located on the banks of the Volga, and has preserved its ancient look up to our time. Amongst the main sights of the city are the outstanding examples of temple architecture of 17th and 18th centuries: Kazan Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour, the Voskresensky (Resurrection) Cathedral and others.
