Samara
Fortifications on the site of modern Samara date back to the 16th century. Nowadays Samara is a regional center, a large industrial city of the Middle Volga Region. In the 19th century, the Samara Province was known as the “granary” of Russia.
Kuibyshev Square in Samara is the largest square of Europe and the second largest in the world. One of the most impressive spots located on the banks of Volga River is the Samarskaya Luka National Park. It is situated on the outskirts of the city. The Volga River curves around the Zhiguli Mountains for about 230 km. Another tourist attraction is Stalin’s Secret Bunker in Samara, a subterranean shelter constructed as a residence for the Soviet Government during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.
